While St. Joseph was founded in 1868, the parish had no pastor until 1870. For the first two years, two priests from St. Vincent de Paul, Fr. John Gillig and Fr. William Doyle, tended to the needs of St. Joseph. In 1870, Fr. Francis Rudolf was appointed pastor of both St. Joseph and St. Vincent de Paul. Fr. Adelrich Kaelin became the first resident pastor of St. Joseph in 1886, the first priest to live at St. Joseph and the first to be responsible for St. Joseph only.
